Jorell Herrera is the Lifchez-Stronach Curatorial Intern in Egyptian Art for 2023-2024. Jorell works with curators on "shelf lists," or "digital object locators," for several galleries, assists with inventory, and adds/corrects object measurements in the Museum's database by consulting older printed records. He is also digitizing a research project on Block Statues for online accessibility and observing how visitors interact with the art on display in the Egyptian galleries. "This statuette depicts Amun, whose primary cult center was the city of Thebes. Amun rose to prominence in the New Kingdom but continued to be important into later eras, including the Third Intermediate Period (ca. 1070-664 BCE), to which this piece dates. It is a remarkable example of an Egyptian work made of solid gold. Amun holds an ankh in his left hand and a scimitar in his right. The original base and double-feather portion of his crown have since been lost, making this already small piece appear smaller than it was, now just over six inches tall. It nonetheless bears a high level of detail due to the statuette being made in metal with a solid cast body and the other elements made separately. The statuette may have been the centerpiece of a small shrine in a larger temple, and a small loop on the top of Amun’s cap suggests that this statuette may possibly have been suspended by a chain worn by a priest when the statuette needed to be transported during religious festivals.

I very much admire this piece because it demonstrates how the Egyptians blended medium with cosmology–they associated gold, a material that does not rust or tarnish, with the skin of their gods, showing that they associated this observable property of the material with their idea of the permanence of their deities."
