Dear Colleagues,
It is my pleasure to advise you that Lewis & Clark has been awarded an NEA 2009 “Access to Artistic Excellence” Grant for its AccessCeramics.org project at http://accessceramics.org. These funds will allow for further expansion of the accessCeramics image collection of current ceramic artists’ works and will begin to introduce master artist works to the collection. This collaborative project between the Art Department and Watzek library was launched in Spring 2008 and currently includes 128 artists and over 2,000 images.
Mark Dahl is the accessCeramics project director, Ted Vogel is the collection curator, and the project team includes Margo Ballantyne, Jeremy McWilliams, and Miranda Costa. This team has been actively promoting and presenting this digital image resource, including recent presentations at the College Art Association 2009 Annual Conference (2/09), the NITLE Summit (4/08 and 3/09), the Northwest History and Heritage Symposium (4/09), and the Visual Resources Association (VRA) Annual conference (3/09). In addition, they exhibited accessCeramics at the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts (NCECA) Annual Conference and were invited to present at the Symposium on Teaching with Digital Collections in the Liberal Arts Curriculum at Reed College last month (5/09).
Further, Jeremy McWilliams wrote an article on the project in the code4lib Journal. Jeremy and Mark authored a book chapter about the project in a forthcoming book: “Flickr and Digital Image Collections” in Library Mashups: Exploring new ways to deliver library data. Information Today, 2009 (forthcoming).
Please note you can “browse” the collection under seven different “fields” with the ability to browse five of those fields by either list or “tag cloud.” We hope that you will both “link to” and pass on information about this website to faculty members and students who are interested in ceramics, sculpture or 3D design.
